Zaragoza Hyperscale Data Centre Campus

Transforming five individually engineered water treatment systems into one scalable, repeatable platform for hyperscale data centre deployment.
Whitewater Group developed a standardised water treatment platform for a five-campus hyperscale data centre programme in Zaragoza, Spain.

The original campus designs had been developed individually, creating variation across plant layouts, equipment schedules, controls, mechanical and electrical integration, commissioning and operational
The Challenge

Treating each campus as a separate engineering project created multiple interfaces across the programme and limited repeatability between sites.

Different layouts, equipment selections, vendor strategies, controls philosophies and commissioning methods increased complexity across engineering, procurement and delivery.

The challenge was not simply to replicate one system across every campus. Each site had different treatment and storage requirements, so the solution needed to reduce unnecessary variation while retaining the flexibility to respond to individual design duties.

From individual designs to a common engineering platform

Whitewater developed a common architecture around standardised UF and RO systems, creating a repeatable foundation for engineering, procurement, manufacturing and commissioning.

The approach incorporated:

  • standardised equipment schedules and preferred supply chain
  • 100% off-site assembled modular systems
  • integrated mechanical, electrical and controls packages
  • common Sequence of Operations
  • common commissioning methodology
  • scalable modular capacity based on a common design

This shifted the programme away from fully re-engineering each campus and towards a consistent platform that could be reused, refined and improved across multiple deployments.

Integrated off-site. Ready for repeatable deployment.

The standardised platform was developed around a 100% off-site assembled approach, with mechanical, electrical and controls integration completed within the modular package.

Moving this work into a controlled manufacturing environment improves consistency across assembly and integration while reducing the amount of site-based activity required during installation.

It also creates a more repeatable delivery process, allowing lessons from each build to be carried forward into subsequent systems.

IMPACT

A repeatable model for programme-wide delivery

The Zaragoza programme created a more consistent approach across design, procurement, manufacturing, commissioning and operations. Standardisation reduced variation, simplified interfaces and enabled lessons from each deployment to inform the next, creating a platform that can be replicated and continuously improved across the wider programme.

Design once. Standardise. Replicate. Improve.

One Platform.
Configured by Campus.

The common platform was designed to accommodate different campus requirements without losing the benefits of standardisation.

Treatment capacity, storage and equipment quantities can be adapted within a consistent engineering framework, allowing each system to respond to its required duty while maintaining the same underlying design principles.

This balances repeatability with flexibility, supporting a common approach across engineering, procurement, controls and commissioning without forcing every campus into an identical configuration.

Standard where it matters. Flexible where required.
